Blurring the Distinctions

A goal of Sonic Babylon is to blur the distinctions most people make between art and the events of their everyday lives. We do this by transforming common digital devices such as laptops and mobile phones into musical instruments and then inviting everyone to become a creative participant as they go about their day.

In a sound garden, visitors may listen to what others have planted (songs, stories, natural sounds), prune those sounds (altering volume and repetition), and even add sounds of their own.

The point is to create a living garden of sound; one that not only changes from moment to moment and day to day, but reflects the history of the place in sound, as well. My job as a composer is to sculpt and nurture the garden, fine-tuning and transforming it into an experience that both surprises and delights. The challenge I share with users is to redefine the role of the audience and its contribution to this ever-expanding mosaic of collective artistic expressions.
