The Three-Tiered Garden

We're taking a three-tiered approach to organizing the sound of each garden. In addition to Ground Cover we'll also be planting Remix!Trees and Flowers.

Remix!Trees--a term we found at freesound--are sound clusters that consist of a single core sound plus multiple remixes by others in the community. We'll be using short sounds local to each community that we'll combine, remix, loop, and sculpt into a unified sonic event.

Flowers, on the other hand, are the real stars of the garden. They are the featured sounds, local in every sense. At the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra we're including the first sound recorded on the continent, along with speeches, snippets of early radio broadcasts, and music, ancient to modern. These sound flowers, some of which will loop, others that will occur at predetermined intervals, will personalize each garden, giving visitors an experience somewhere on the fault line between then and now.
