Sounds of Australia

The National Registry of Recorded Sound, an outgrowth of the Recorded Sound Branch of the NFSA, was launched in February 2007 as a way of highlighting Australia's rich and varied sound heritage. Each year ten entries are added to an ever-growing list of iconic sound recordings.

These sounds, from all periods and across all sound media, include not only music, but spoken word, radio programs, and well-known advertising jingles, to name but a few of the many possibilities. As part of this project, the public is asked each year to nominate their favorites. So far, 30 sounds have been chosen, 20 of which are included on a CD released by ABC Classics in 2008. When we learned today that the voting on the next 10 sounds is currently underway, and that they will be announced the day the NFSA Sound Garden opens, it immediately became obvious to us that these sounds should be the flowers of the garden.
